War of the Roses in Nashville
The final and perhaps most dramatic act of the struggle for the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment occurred here in Nashville during an oppressively hot August in 1920. Read about the Suffragists and Anti-Suffragists and the roses that signified their positions. The legislative showdown that was to give American women the right to vote hinged on the vote of the youngest member of the assembly (and his mother in East Tennessee)

• U.S. Patents Depository Library at Vanderbilt: The Stevenson Science & Engineering Library of Vanderbilt University is a depository library for the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office. The library is open to members of the public who are seeking patent and trademark information.

Museums

• Belmont Mansion: Located on the Belmont University campus, this Italianate villa mansion was built in the mid-1800's by Adelicia Acklen Hayes. Opened for guided tours.

Special Features

The Elephant Sanctuary at Hohenwald, Tennessee is one of the most unusual animal sanctuaries in North America. Located 65 miles outside of Nashville, The Sanctuary is the nation's first natural habitat refuge built specifically for endangered Asian elephants. As a true sanctuary, it's not intended to provide entertainment and it's closed to the public. However, education is one of the key components of the Sanctuary and since its inception in 1995, The Elephant Sanctuary's outreach program has taught more than 26,000 Middle Tennessee school children a respect for wildlife through its focus on Asian elephants. The Elephant Sanctuary's web site provides a wonderful virtual tour of this unique refuge. You can read about its mission to provide a haven for old, sick or needy elephants in a setting of green pastures, old-growth forests, spring-fed ponds and a heated barn for cold winter nights. Compelling biographies of the individual elephants, along with delightful photos, are highlighted. You can learn what the elephants eat and what their favorite foods are (several seem to favor watermelon). You can even learn how you can "feed an elephant for a day" through sponsorships. An excellent site that gives you a perspective on one of the most unique places in middle Tennessee.
